Cleveland Guardians outfielder Angel Martinez showed up to spring training with a new approach at the plate, and it paid immediate dividends. He raked all throughout camp, which normally wouldn’t have meant a whole lot, except for the fact that he hasn’t missed a beat since the regular season started.
Martinez has a .786 OPS with nine home runs through 48 games, which is nearly equal to the 11 homers he hit all of last season. It has been a remarkable improvement for the 24-year-old, but don’t let his uptick in offensive production distract you from the fact that he has made big improvements in other areas as well.
Martinez has been raking, but he has also been dazzling in the field as well. The Guardians shouted him out during Thursday’s game when they shared a clip of his incredible diving catch down the line in left field during the win over the Detroit Tigers.
“Angel Martinez is working towards a Gold Glove,” said the Guardians.

Martinez’s glove wasn’t anything special last season, but with this kind of improvement with both the bat and the glove, it’s clear his confidence is playing a huge role.
With his performance, he has earned his right to stay in the lineup every day. Regular playing time is pivotal for young players as well, and he has even found his way to the top of the lineup here and there.
So much attention was placed on other young outfield prospects heading into this season. Big things were expected from Chase DeLauter, CJ Kayfus, and George Valera, but Martinez has crashed that party and made himself undeniable.
It is one of the most exciting developments for this franchise so far and Martinez is a huge reason why the Guardians are rolling and have won nine of the last ten games. Hopefully he can keep it up.
