The Cleveland Guardians made a significant move within their minor league system on Monday, promoting one of their most intriguing young position players to Triple-A Columbus.
According to Paul Hoynes, first baseman Ralphy Velazquez has been promoted from Double-A Akron to Triple-A Columbus, putting the 2023 first-round pick one step away from the major leagues.
“G’s have promoted 1B Ralphy Velazquez, No. 1 pick in 2023, to Triple-A Columbus from Double-A Akron. Velazquez, who played some left field in Akron, is hitting .314 (46-145) with seven homers and 30 RBI at Akron. He posted a .980 OPS for the RubberDucks.”

The numbers that earned him this promotion are impossible to ignore. Velazquez slashed .314 with seven home runs and 30 RBI across 36 games at Akron while posting a .980 OPS, one of the more eye-catching lines in the entire Cleveland minor league system this season. For a 20-year-old to post those kinds of numbers at Double-A, one of the more challenging levels in professional baseball, it signals a player who has taken a meaningful developmental leap.

Velazquez is a left-handed bat who plays first base primarily but has shown the versatility to handle left field as well, which gives Cleveland’s front office additional lineup flexibility as they think about his future. At 6-1 and 240 pounds, he has the physical profile of a legitimate power hitter, and the .566 slugging percentage he has put up across two seasons at the A-plus level backs that projection up considerably.
Velazquez was drafted by Cleveland in the first round, 23rd overall, out of Huntington Beach High School in California in the 2023 MLB Draft. He was born on May 28, 2005 in San Pedro, California, making him just 20 years old. The fact that a player that young is already at Triple-A and knocking on the door of the big leagues speaks to both his natural ability and the work he has put in to develop since being drafted.
The timing of the promotion is worth noting given the context of what the Guardians are dealing with at the big league level. First base has been an ongoing conversation all season, with both Kyle Manzardo and Rhys Hoskins battling inconsistency. If Velazquez arrives at Columbus and continues to hit the way he did at Akron, that conversation is going to get considerably louder before the summer is over.
