The Cleveland Guardians have had a number of high-profile prospects coming through their productive farm system recently. So, some of the lesser-known players might not be greeted with the same level of anticipation.
Pitcher Parker Messick was called up late last season as the Guardians put a six-man starting rotation into use to deal with a difficult schedule. He was not considered a top 10 prospect at the time, so his MLB debut did not generate the hype, in hindsight, that it probably should have.
The 6-foot left-hander was something of a revelation, posting a 3-1 record with a 2.72 ERA over seven starts while helping the Guardians mount a historic rally to repeat as AL Central champs. Despite that, he was still part of a spring training competition to retain his role in this year’s five-man rotation.
Messick has risen well beyond that challenge as well, and the Guardians pitcher is now drawing major breakout hype from Bleacher Report, with an AL All-Star berth maybe on its way.
“Parker Messick began the 2025 season as the No. 17 prospect in the Guardians system, so his standout performance after making his MLB debut on Aug. 20 ended up being one of the biggest surprises of the season. The undersized frame and lack of overpowering stuff made it easy to expect regression, but he continues to produce at an All-Star level as the sample size grows,” Joel Reuter wrote.
After a win against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday that raised his record to 5-1, Messick has a 2.35 ERA with a 0.99 WHIP this season. Relying on a wide repertoire of pitches, he has held opponents to a .206 batting average and has 58 strikeouts and just 14 walks in 53.2 innings.
Though it is almost two months away, and a lot can change between now and then, Messick could be in line to start the 2026 All-Star Game for the American League. His primary competition would come from Jose Soriano of the Los Angeles Angels and Cam Schlittler of the New York Yankees at this point.
Showing the poise of a veteran, Messick also should remain a contender for AL Rookie of the Year throughout the season. He would be the only pitcher among the group of favorites that includes teammate Chase DeLauter, an outfielder who made his much-anticipated MLB regular-season debut this year.
The Guardians have a well-deserved reputation for developing pitchers within their organization, and Messick has already proven to be the latest example of that success.
