Travis Bazzana is already endearing himself to Cleveland fans in ways that go well beyond what he does with the bat.
Monday night against the Los Angeles Angels, the 23-year-old rookie did something that stopped the baseball world in its tracks and went viral almost immediately. With the Guardians already leading big in the third inning, Bazzana challenged a called strike from home plate umpire. The ABS system sided with the umpire, ruling the pitch was in the zone. Bazzana lost the challenge.
And then he turned to the umpire and said two words that almost nobody in professional baseball ever says in that moment.
“My bad,” Bazzana told the umpire after losing the challenge.
“Guardians rookie Travis Bazzana apologizes to the umpire for getting a challenge wrong,” Jomboy Media posted.

What happened next made the moment even better.
On the very next pitch, Bazzana drove a ball to left center field for a two-run double, his first career big league double, extending Cleveland’s lead to 7-0 and sending Progressive Field into a frenzy. From apology to RBI double in the span of one pitch. Only Bazzana.
The viral nature of the moment reflects something the Cleveland fanbase has already picked up on in the short time Bazzana has been in the big leagues. This is not a player performing for the camera or managing his image. This is a player who genuinely loves the game, plays it the right way, treats everyone around him with respect, and lets his actions on the field do the talking.
Parker Messick called him an animal earlier this week for the way he approaches every single at-bat and every single moment on the field. Stephen Vogt has spoken about his conviction and his preparation. Austin Hedges called him a superstar. And now the broader baseball world got a glimpse of exactly who Travis Bazzana is.
Seven stolen bases. A home run. A double. A .423 on-base percentage.
Travis Bazzana is going to be very, very good for a very long time in Cleveland.
