Cleveland Guardians fans have known infielder Brayan Rocchio for a long time, but it’s important to remember that he is just 25 years old. He has been around forever, but remains a steady young player.
That means he might have taken a little while to find his best version and hit his ceiling. It’s still too early in the 2026 campaign to declare that Rocchio is finally enjoying his breakout performance. Still, it’s impossible to deny the fact that he’s looking like a much-improved offensive player.
His hot streak, in a way, started on April 7, when Gabriel Arias went down with a hamstring injury, and Rocchio had to fill in for him at shortstop. He did with no issues, mainly because that’s actually his natural position.
Since that date, Rocchio is hitting .341 with a .408 OBP and a .523 slugging percentage. His 166 wRC+ since that day is wild.
However, a Guardians coach doesn’t think the position change has anything to do with Rocchio being red-hot.
“Hitting coach Grant Fink sees Rocchio’s surge having less to do with being comfortable with his defensive position and more about his natural progression as a hitter. The at-bats, Fink said, have been trending this way since last season. And now the results are catching up,” Joe Noga of Cleveland.com wrote.
Rocchio is still at an age in which he can learn, make adjustments, and adopt them as part of his new identity. His approach is now simple: improved plate discipline and more contact lead to better results.
Working with former major leaguer Martin Prado in the offseason has paid huge dividends. Rocchio has increased his walk rate from 5.7 percent to 11.5 percent, and he has trimmed his strikeout rate from 20.1 percent to 11.5 percent. Oh, and he already has three home runs, three doubles, and a 140 wRC+ for the season, before taking the field on Wednesday.
Rocchio didn’t make any major changes to his mechanics or his timing mechanism. He is just doing a better job at not swinging at balls and swinging at strikes with purpose. That simple philosophy is taking his offensive game to a whole new level.
