CJ Kayfus faced a series of somewhat unforeseen circumstances that ultimately resulted in the Cleveland Guardians demoting him to Triple-A. Since then, the versatile hitting prospect has responded as the organization would have hoped.
When outfielder George Valera came off the injured list on April 13 after being sidelined to open the season with a calf strain, Kayfus was sent to Columbus to clear the necessary roster spot. In his first five games there, the first baseman/DH/outfielder has been making a strong case to get back to the majors.
In fact, since 2024, Kayfus has been leading all Cleveland minor leaguers in an impressive stat, posting a wRC+ of 155.
“Highest (wRC+) by current Cleveland Guardians players in the minor leagues since the start of the 2024 season (500+ PA): 1) CJ Kayfus 155; 2) Cooper Ingle 154; 3) Angel Genao 135; 4) Travis Bazzana 133; 4) Wuilfredo Antunez 133,” Guardians Prospective wrote on X.

Kayfus’ ranking ahead of Ingle is notable, as the Columbus catcher has been one of the best hitters in all of the minors so far this season. Since going back down, Kayfus has six hits with one double and four walks to give him a slash line of .300/.417/.350, playing games at first base and in right field.
The 24-year-old made his MLB debut last August and batted .220 with a .707 OPS while helping the Guardians rally to win the AL Central. He entered spring training looking like part of a first base platoon with Kyle Manzardo, with plenty of additional at-bats available at DH. Then, the organization signed Rhys Hoskins, which put the veteran power hitter into that mix.
They each made the Opening Day roster, but Kayfus struggled, going 0-for-10 in his first four games. He was starting to show signs of improvement, going 4-for-12 over the next five games before being demoted.
Meanwhile, Manzardo was faring even worse, with a batting average as low as .061 until a recent hot streak pushed it up to .182, though he still has just one home run. Hoskins is batting just .214 with one home run in 56 at-bats.
Kayfus is likely to return to the majors at some point this season, either based on his performance, the lackluster production of those ahead of him, or an injury that creates an opening.
