The Cleveland Guardians have managed to put together an impressive collection of young talent across all areas of the roster. It’s not just the pitching, which is the department yielding the best results: they have also developed and nurtured multiple infielders with a chance to contribute in 2026 or the future.
The Guardians have the gold standard at third base, Jose Ramirez, but that’s not all. Brayan Rocchio has been better than expected with a 102 wRC+ before Thursday’s game, Kyle Manzardo hit 27 homers last year and appears to be slowly finding his swing, Rhys Hoskins has a 108 wRC+, and Juan Brito remains promising despite some recent struggles.
Daniel Schneemann, third on the team with 0.6 fWAR through Wednesday, can play both the infield and the outfield, and Gabriel Arias was starting to hit his stride when he went down with an injury. Of course, there’s also Travis Bazzana, the Guardians’ No. 1 prospect who is starting to heat up in Triple-A.
There are too many viable options competing for a few spots on Cleveland’s infield.
Former Guardians pitcher Jensen Lewis views the middle infield situation as a good problem to have. It’s always important to develop quality depth, and Cleveland has managed to put together an impressive group.
“You’ve got to put the best 26 out there,” Lewis said, thinking about the hypothetical scenario in which every name mentioned in this article is healthy.

Ramirez will, of course, be a mainstay at third base, and as long as Rocchio is hitting, he won’t be taken out of the shortstop position. Manzardo and Hoskins will alternate between first base, the DH spot, and the bench, so second base will be the wild card here.
If Bazzana is called up within the next few weeks and manages to be an above-average offensive player, that’s the end of the competition, no matter who’s healthy and who’s injured. Then again, he could struggle or not come up until June or even later. That’s where things could get interesting.
Brito’s defense is not as polished as his bat, but he could be a solid everyday player if given time. Schneemann is playing very well, and Arias has been a starter for years.
As Lewis said, performance will be the defining factor in the race for playing time, and that’s how it should be.
