The Cleveland Guardians dropped their series finale in St. Louis, losing 5-3 to the Cardinals on Wednesday. It’s the first time in 2026 that they have lost two in a row.
Despite logging eight hits, none of them belonged to recently promoted infielder Juan Brito. It’s part of a recent trend that is slowly becoming worrisome for Cleveland.
Brito, promoted on April 7, had five hits in his first three games, including two doubles, and scored two runs while adding an RBI.
After that, Brito is 1-for-15 in his last five games, with no extra-base hits, two runs, no RBI, two walks, and six strikeouts. Granted, the sample is tiny, but the prospect is starting to encounter some issues hitting major league pitching.
It’s normal. It’s part of the game: not every prospect comes up ready to be a star. Those are the exceptions. However, the Guardians called him up looking for solutions, and right now, he is not providing them.
For the season, his batting average is already down to .222 with a .276 OBP and a .296 slugging percentage. His OPS is down to a disappointing .572.
It’s very early to judge Brito’s skills and talent level. Eight games aren’t enough to do that, at any level. But fans showing some concern is understandable.
Brito had been very solid in nine Triple-A games before his call-up, slashing .314/.405/.457 with a 130 wRC+ and racking up more walks than strikeouts. However, big-league pitching represents a huge test for every prospect, and you could say Brito is struggling to adjust for the first time in a while.
He is good enough to make adjustments and turn around his luck, but it might not happen tomorrow. These things take a while, and one has to wonder how long the Guardians’ leash will be, knowing that they have a potential franchise-altering talent in Triple-A, in Travis Bazzana.
At the very least, Brito deserves a few more weeks to see if he can rediscover his form. He will need to start showing something soon, because every win counts.
