The road trip opened with a reminder that Cleveland is not going to sleepwalk through every series on the schedule.
The Atlanta Braves handled the Guardians 11-5 on Friday night, handing Cleveland its most lopsided defeat of the season and doing the majority of their damage in a sixth inning that exposed some of the very issues Stephen Vogt had flagged before the first pitch was even thrown.
Vogt addressed the challenge of facing Atlanta’s lineup in his pregame comments.
“That’s where we’ve gotten in trouble so far this year,” Vogt said. “We get into bad counts, give up free bases. Especially against a team like this, you’ve got to limit free bases. You’ve got to stay in good counts. It’s easier said than done, but that’s the game.”
The sixth inning was an example of everything Vogt was trying to warn his pitchers about. Ronald Acuna Jr. led off with a home run off Slade Cecconi to tie the game at 2-2, and then Matt Olson hit a home run that Cecconi left elevated in the zone. The two-run blast put Atlanta ahead 4- 2 and opened the floodgates. By the time the inning was finished, the Braves had pushed six runs across and effectively ended any realistic chance Cleveland had of pulling off a comeback.
The night did have a positive development. Manzardo crushed his first home run of the season in the fourth inning. It gave Manzardo hits in consecutive games for the first time all season. The underlying signs of a turnaround beginning are starting to appear, even in a tough loss.

Cecconi took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season after allowing five runs, four earned, across five and a third innings. It was a significant step back from the six shutout innings of one-hit ball he delivered in his previous start against the Cubs, and it raises legitimate questions about his consistency heading into a stretch where Cleveland needs every arm to be reliable.
The Guardians fall to 8-6. Parker Messick takes the mound Saturday night as Cleveland looks to even the series against a Braves team that showed on Friday exactly why they are one of the more dangerous offenses in the sport.
