The Cleveland Guardians received a solid boost down the stretch of the 2025 season when talented outfield prospect George Valera surfaced to help boost an improbable playoff run. He was projected to play a prominent role with the 2026 team, but a calf strain has delayed his campaign and landed him with Triple-A Columbus for the time being.
Valera is raking during his brief time with Columbus so far, collecting eight hits in his first 18 at-bats with a home run, nine RBIs, and a 2:1 walk-to-strikeout ratio. He looks like he is ready to roll whenever the Guardians want to bring him back up, and manager Stephen Vogt recently touched on the topic to give fans an update.
Mason Horodyski of WEWS recently shared a clip from Vogt’s media session on Wednesday, and when asked about Valera, he noted that there is no rush. This team has visions of success far beyond April, and Valera will still need a bit more time to ramp up.
“We know what George is capable of, and it’s great that he had a good game last night, but we need him to be built up, ready to play outfield every day… so it’s going to take some time,” said Vogt.

Many fans are clamoring for the Guardians to bring Valera back up immediately, given how much the offense has struggled. Outside of Chase DeLauter, there are some ghastly numbers up and down this lineup, though Cleveland has gone through an absolute gauntlet of talented starting pitchers to begin the season.
DeLauter has been so good that there are already people calling for him to get a contract extension. Seeing him rake early in the season makes it even more exciting to think about Valera slotting into the outfield alongside him, hopefully for many years to come.
Calf strains can be tricky and the last thing this team needs is for it to resurface and keep Valera out much longer. Vogt is taking the right approach in being patient and not making a reactionary move simply because his offense isn’t quite performing up to expectations through the season’s first week or two.
