The Cleveland Guardians picked up one of their most impressive wins of the young 2026 season on Monday night, taking down the Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 4-2 behind a dominant performance from pitcher Parker Messick.
Cleveland entered the matchup facing one of the most talented rosters in baseball, but they delivered a complete performance. The win pushed the Guardians to 3-2 on the season and provided an early statement against a World Series contender.
Messick was the story of the night.
The young left-hander turned in an outstanding outing in his first start of the season, throwing six scoreless innings while allowing just five hits and striking out five batters. He needed only 76 pitches to get through six innings, keeping the Dodgers’ powerful lineup off balance from start to finish.

“What an outstanding outing that was,” manager Stephen Vogt said. “It just felt like he was in control the whole time. He stayed smooth, executed pitches and got quick outs.”
Messick also understood the moment, going up against a lineup filled with star power.
“It was one of the coolest things a rookie can ask for,” Messick said. “I’m so grateful I was able to go out there and glorify the Lord. What a way to start a rookie year.”
While the pitching set the tone, the offense did just enough to secure the win.
The Guardians broke through in the third inning when veteran catcher Austin Hedges and Steven Kwan delivered doubles to give Cleveland an early 1-0 lead. Kwan continued his strong start to the season, finishing the game with three hits.
The game remained tight until the seventh inning when Cleveland created some separation. The Guardians loaded the bases and capitalized with key at-bats. Rhys Hoskins drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run, and Daniel Schneemann followed with a clutch two-run double to extend the lead to 4-0.
“Rhys’ at-bat was the at-bat of the game,” Hedges said.
Relievers Shawn Armstrong, Erik Sabrowski, and Cade Smith combined to finish the game, though the Dodgers made things interesting late. They scored two runs in the ninth inning, highlighted by a double from Mookie Betts, but Cleveland was able to close the door and secure the win.
Overall, it was exactly the type of performance the Guardians needed.
If Messick can continue to perform at this level and the offense builds on this momentum, the Guardians could quickly establish themselves as a team to watch in 2026.
