Tanner Bibee opened the season for the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday with five innings of three-run ball, which earned him a no decision in a 6-4 win over the Seattle Mariners. It wasn’t Bibee’s best work, but he kept his team in the game and helped get Cleveland off to a 1-0 start in 2026.
As nice as it would be to make it through a full season with five starting pitchers, that’s nearly impossible. You don’t expect to need to rely on rotation depth this early, but that is now under consideration as Bibee experienced some shoulder soreness at the end of his 78-pitch outing.
Cleveland.com’s Paul Hoynes had an update on the situation on Saturday and reported that Bibee tested his shoulder with a 26-pitch bullpen session before Saturday’s game. He said they’ll see how he feels on Sunday to figure out if he’ll start on Tuesday, but overall, he feels good.
“Tanner Bibee tested his sore right shoulder with a 26-pitch bullpen session Saturday at T-Mobile Park. “I felt good,” said Bibee. “They want to see how I bounce back tomorrow and we’ll go from there.” It’s still questionable if he’ll start vs. Dodgers on Tues.,” Hoynes shared on X.

Bibee is a critical aspect of what Cleveland is trying to do this season, and hopefully everything comes back clean on Sunday. If he has to miss Tuesday’s start against Los Angeles, it’s far from the end of the world. The most important thing is that he is ready to go for the long haul and isn’t looking at an extended absence here.
There is no need to push it when we’re not even in April yet. He was the Opening Day starter for a reason and made 87 starts over the past three years as one of this team’s pillars.
Stephen Vogt originally reported good news about the shoulder inflammation prior to Saturday’s session. Hopefully, Sunday brings even more good news and if Bibee misses any time, it is just the one start.
