One of the Cleveland Guardians’ most anticipated season debuts was that of relief pitcher Peyton Pallette. The Rule 5 Draft selection had an outstanding spring training to earn his spot on the team, and he lived up to that billing with a strong performance.
In his first MLB appearance, Pallette entered the second game of the season against the Seattle Mariners in the seventh inning. In relief of starter Gavin Williams and reliever Colin Holderman, Pallette picked up right where he left off this spring, striking out the first two batters he faced. He retired the side in order twice, needing just 21 pitches to do so in a 5-1 road loss.
According to Lance Potosky, the Guardians rookie made history, becoming the first Cleveland pitcher to debut with two perfect innings in almost 60 years.
“Peyton Pallette is the first CLE pitcher to finish their MLB debut with 2.0+ perfect innings since Horacio Pina on August 14, 1968. Pallette struck out a pair of 2025 MLB All-Stars in Brendan Donovan & Cal Raleigh to highlight his stellar debut,” Potosky wrote on X.

After being selected out of the Chicago White Sox organization in December, Pallette became something of a phenomenon in spring training. As a Rule 5 player, he would have to stay on Cleveland’s active roster all season or be given back to Chicago, but the hard-throwing 24-year-old made that potentially difficult decision an easy one by not allowing a run and striking out 11 in 6.0 innings over five appearances.
Cleveland starters Tanner Bibee and Gavin Williams lasted just five innings each in the first two games. On Opening Day, Bibee left the game with shoulder inflammation, and Williams struggled with six walks allowed.
So, the Guardians have relied heavily on their bullpen, and it has been up to the task, for the most part, with three hits and three earned runs in seven innings of work. Pallette is the only reliever to record more than four outs so far.
His emergence could be crucial to the Guardians’ hopes for this season, as their pitching staff is projected to be in the bottom half of MLB. However, Pallette is a wild card that may not be properly taken into account.
As his scoreless streak and reputation grow, he could be one of the biggest surprises in the game.
