The Cleveland Guardians did not get the result they wanted on Friday night, but one storyline continues to dominate early in the 2026 season.
Chase DeLauter is off to a historic start.
The rookie stayed hot in a 5-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners, launching another home run in his first at-bat of the game. It marked his third home run in just two career regular-season games, putting him in rare company in Major League Baseball history.

DeLauter’s early surge comes just one day after his unforgettable debut.
In the season opener, he went 3-5 with two home runs, becoming the first Cleveland player to hit two home runs in his regular-season debut. He also became just the sixth player in MLB history to homer twice in his first career game.
And he has not slowed down.
Despite the loss, DeLauter provided the lone bright spot offensively for Cleveland. The Guardians managed just one run on the night.
After the game, DeLauter was honest about how surreal the moment has been.
“One time I homered in back-to-back games in the minors, but never something like this,” DeLauter said.
The rest of the offense struggled throughout the game.
Cleveland had opportunities, including a key bases-loaded situation in the fifth inning, but failed to capitalize.
On the mound, Gavin Williams showed flashes of dominance but ran into familiar issues. He struck out seven over five innings but walked six batters, and those free passes proved costly.
Still, the biggest takeaway remains clear. The Guardians may have found something special in DeLauter.
