Steven Kwan could not reasonably be blamed if he balked at moving to a new position this season for the Cleveland Guardians. Having failed in his attempt to get a contract extension, which makes him the subject of constant trade rumors, Kwan could prioritize himself and protect his market value for when he does become a free agent.
However, that’s not what the All-Star outfielder is doing. He is admirably putting the team first and is willingly making the transition from left to center.
Of course, this could all lead to an even bigger payday for Kwan, if not from the Guardians then from another appreciative MLB team. Yet, his attitude is refreshing nonetheless.
Kwan’s recent comments about potentially missing out on his fifth Gold Glove show his selfless mindset regarding his defensive role change.
“If [playing in center field] results in me losing a Gold Glove in left because I don’t qualify, I really don’t care,” Kwan said. “I think it’s probably a little vain to say, but I think four Gold Gloves in a lifetime is probably enough for anybody. I know in doing this, I’m helping the team, getting guys more opportunities. I think I’ve been rewarded for playing unselfishly. Whatever the team needs, whatever [manager Stephen Vogt] needs, I think it’ll all work out.”
The Guardians approached Kwan about becoming their center fielder this season likely with two things in mind. First, the move would allow outfield prospects Chase DeLauter and George Valera to play the less demanding corner positions while they adjust to their first full MLB season. Second, as the team’s best defensive outfielder, evidenced by four Gold Glove Awards in his first four seasons, he would make the team better by playing the more difficult position.
Though there have been some adjustments, Kwan looks ready to embark on his center field journey when the season opens against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday. DeLauter is likely going to start in right field, and with Valera on the injured list with a strained calf, Angel Martinez will be in left field coming off an outstanding spring.
With Nolan Jones demoted to Triple-A, that alignment will likely stay in place for the time being. It could last much further into the season if Martinez continues to produce on offense, and DeLauter can avoid the injury issues that plagued him in the minor leagues.
Meanwhile, Kwan will just go about his business, trying to be the best center fielder he can be.
