After recently being outrighted to Triple-A Columbus, Nolan Jones had a choice to make.
He could have declined the assignment and entered free agency, but doing so would have meant walking away from his $2 million salary.
Instead, he chose to stay.
“Nolan Jones has accepted his outright to Triple-A Columbus. He could have declined and become a free agent but would have forfeited his $2 million salary,” Paul Hoynes reported.

From Jones’ perspective, it shows a willingness to bet on himself within the organization. Rather than testing the open market, he will remain with the Guardians and look to work his way back into the major league picture.
For Cleveland, it keeps a familiar player in the system who still has upside.
Jones has shown flashes in the past of being a productive big league hitter, but consistency has been an issue. After struggling through 2025 and again during spring training, he found himself on the outside of the Opening Day roster.
Still, the organization has not completely closed the door.
By accepting the assignment, Jones gives himself an opportunity to reset in Triple-A and prove he deserves another shot. If he can regain his form, he could quickly re-enter the conversation, especially over the course of a long season.
Walking away from a guaranteed $2 million would have been a significant risk, particularly given his recent struggles.
Now, the focus shifts to what comes next.
Jones will begin the season in Columbus, where he will need to show improvement at the plate and consistency in his overall game. If he does, an opportunity could open up sooner rather than later.
For now, both sides move forward together.
And while he may not be on the Opening Day roster, Jones’ decision ensures his story with the Guardians is not over just yet.
