With the way the Cleveland Guardians have navigated the offseason, it’s evident that the roster is built to allow plenty of room for young talent to emerge in 2026. There are no big bats coming in free agency or through trades to come add some thump to this lineup, but that thump could absolutely come from a number of different blossoming talents already in Cleveland.
With how poorly Cleveland’s outfield performed in 2025, Angel Martinez, Nolan Jones, and others left the door wide open for somebody to walk through and take their jobs. One young player is in a perfect position to do so despite having just two games in the big leagues under his belt, and one insider believes the entire offense hinges on his success.
In a recent article for Cleveland.com, Joe Noga wrote about how Cleveland’s entire offensive strategy hinges on the success of Chase DeLauter. A once highly-touted prospect with an extensive injury history, he has the ability to immediately become a middle-of-the-order bat that could elevate this team, and if he flops, there isn’t a reliable contingency plan in place.
“Now there’s real pressure for him to produce because really, the Guardian’s whole off season strategy kind of revolved around him,” Cleveland.com Guardians beat reporter Joe Noga explained.
DeLauter recently opened up in an article with The Athletic about how much this game means to him, and it was evident that the moment wasn’t too big for him when the Guardians surprisingly called him up to make his debut in the AL Wild Card series against the Detroit Tigers. He became just the sixth player ever to debut in the playoffs, but the real work starts now as he will likely crack the Opening Day lineup.
Manager Stephen Vogt has spoken glowingly about his 24-year-old outfielder and fully believes in his ability to quickly blossom into an anchor that this team sorely needs. Fans saw it in the minors and have heard about his potential for years, and his development is one of the most exciting subplots of this season.
All he has to do is stay healthy and the rest should take care of itself.
