The Cleveland Guardians are always keeping tabs on young talent. They may not make a lot of big-time moves, but they’re always a team to keep an eye on when it comes to acquiring prospects.
That was the case with Alfonsin Rosario. The outfielder was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 2023 MLB Draft.
Just when he felt like he was hitting his stride, the Guardians acquired him in a trade that sent veteran reliever Eli Morgan to the Cubs. The young slugger recently reflected on that new opportunity.
“I was back at home when I got the call that I was coming over here. Ever since the first game, I’ve been excited to come out here and play every day. I’m always ready to go,” Rosario said. “Man, at first, being traded from Chicago was sad. I wasn’t excited to leave the Cubs, but I got to Cleveland, and I’ve been having fun playing for the Guardians organization. I am very happy to be here.”
Rosario turned some heads in the Guardians’ farm system last season. He played 115 games between High-A and Double-A. He earned the promotion after posting a .268 batting average with 47 RBIs and 16 home runs for Lake County, and he finished the campaign with a .211 average and 27 hits for Akron.
The 21-year-old has things to work on at the plate. But the talent is there, and even though this organization has preached patience to help young players, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see him among the potential candidates to earn a call-up to the Guardians at some point next season.
