The Cleveland Guardians have plenty of reasons to feel proud right now.
Even though their season didn’t end on a high note, they fought hard to make the playoffs when it seemed almost impossible.
In fact, they made MLB history by overcoming a 15.5-game deficit to win the AL Central, the largest a team has ever overcome to clinch a division.
Manager Stephen Vogt recently opened up on how important it was to stay together through adversity.
“There’s so many things to take away from this year. I couldn’t be more proud of our group and our guys. Just the resiliency they showed throughout the year. We never quit. Those guys showed up every day ready to win. They had everything and more thrown at them throughout the course of the year. They never let any of it get them down. We’re able to win the division, and didn’t quite get as far as we wanted to, but I couldn’t be more proud of the resiliency of our group,” Vogt said.
Vogt is now a finalist for AL Manager of the Year for the second time in as many years in charge.
That’s not bad for someone who didn’t have any previous experience.
The Guardians gave Vogt a three-year contract, and after the early returns of this partnership, they will be wise to keep him around for many more years to come.
They’re reportedly working on an extension, and it would make sense to complete a new deal before the start of next season.
The way this team stuck together and rallied down the stretch is a testament to its resiliency and how much respect and belief they have in one another.
It’s also a testament to Vogt’s hard work and how he’s won over the locker room and earned the players’ trust.
Sometimes, that can take a team further than talent or big salaries.
