The Cleveland Guardians have an up-and-coming manager who has already proven to be worthy of trust and opportunity.
Unfortunately, he could lose one of his key guys.
According to a report by team insider Paul Hoynes, Guardians Associate Manager Craig Albernaz is currently a strong candidate to take the reins of the San Francisco Giants, as they just chose to part ways with manager Bob Melvin:
“Albernaz, a bullpen coach on the Giants staff from 2020 to 2023, has been mentioned as a replacement for Bob Melvin, who was fired at the end of this season. Former big league catchers Nick Hundley, Kurt Suzuki and Vance Wilson have reportedly interviewed for the job. Hundley is reportedly a favorite,” Hoynes wrote.
Of course, this would be a big blow to Stephen Vogt’s coaching staff and aspirations.
Still, given the way he’s handled things and has gotten through crises since he was appointed as Terry Francona’s replacement, he’s more than worthy of the benefit of the doubt.
Not many people thought Vogt would find success so quickly, given his lack of experience as a manager.
Then, after reaching the ALCS in his very first season in charge of the team, he managed to get the team back to the playoffs despite having a worse roster.
Through losing streaks and with one of the least impressive offenses in all of baseball, Vogt still managed to keep the team motivated to storm right back from a 15.5-game deficit and win the AL Central Division.
Now, the team is reportedly working around the clock to make sure that he’s going to stay there for longer.
He’s about to enter the third and final year of the three-year contract they signed him to, and they will be wise to get him locked up for years to come with an extension.
