When it rains, it pours for the Cleveland Guardians.
Their recent road struggles continued at home, this time against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Rays dominated with a 9-0 win, which was the Guardians’ sixth consecutive loss.
That’s why Cleveland starter Tanner Bibee struggled to keep his emotions in check when he went into the dugout.
The broadcast caught him yelling and looking emotional in the fourth inning.
Asked about that, Guardians manager Stephen Vogt acknowledged that things aren’t going well.
“Emotions are high right now. Emotions are high with everybody,” Vogt said. “Tanner is one of the most competitive, fiery people I’ve ever been around, and he came in trying to pump the boys up. And I told him, ‘Not now. Take it downstairs.’”
Bibee left the game after six innings. He gave up eight hits, five earned runs, three walks and two home runs.
However, the team’s struggles were even more evident at the plate.
They managed only two hits (singles by Gabriel Arias and Brayan Rocchio) while striking out 13 times.
The Guardians have not scored for 28 consecutive innings.
They were back at Progressive Field after a dreadful six-game road trip against the Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers.
Cleveland is still technically alive in the playoff race but keeps falling behind by the day.
Stakes are as high as they’ve ever been this season, and the players need to make sure emotions don’t get the best of them during this crucial stretch.
