Visiting a tough New York Mets team, the Cleveland Guardians were able to hold on to win at Citi Field on Monday.
Circumstances forced the Guardians to put all their trust in rookie reliever Nic Enright.
Manager Stephen Vogt had used all his high-leverage relievers, Erik Sabrowski, Hunter Gaddis and Cade Smith.
In addition, Emmanuel Clase is on non-disciplinary paid leave as MLB investigates his involvement in a possible betting scheme.
After Smith got four key outs, it was Enright’s turn in the bottom of the 10th with an automatic runner at second base and a two-run lead.
He rose to the occasion and got the save, the first of his MLB career.
“Nic Enright picked up his first ML save tonight in his first opportunity. Last 6 appearances: 6.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER,” Al Pawlowski wrote on X.

It has been a while since Enright allowed an earned run.
His 2.01 season ERA in 22.1 innings proves that he is more than just a player who has had to overcome adversity. He is one of the stars in the Guardians’ bullpen too.
Enright looked determined throwing first-pitch strikes to three of the four batters he faced and allowing just an unearned run.
It was a night he will remember for a long time.
After coming back from a cancer diagnosis in 2022, he is, as the Guardians said on their X account, an inspiration.

Cleveland improved to 57-55 on the season and is eight games behind the first-place Detroit Tigers in the AL Central.
Believe it or not, it is just two games back of a playoff spot in the American League.
