The Cleveland Guardians have finally called up C.J. Kayfus.
The superstar prospect has been on an absolute roll, and it was about time he was given a chance to prove what he can do in the majors.
With that in mind, MLB analyst Jim Callis dug deep into his tape and his numbers to reveal what he can bring to the table for Stephen Vogt’s team:
“Based on Baseball Reference Wins Above Replacement, Cleveland ranks 29th in value derived from center field (-2.1 bWAR) and right field (-3.2 bWAR) in 2025. Its right fielders rank as the second-worst position-player group in MLB. Kayfus should be an upgrade on what the Guardians have gotten out of Nolan Jones, Jhonkensy Noel and Johnathan Rodríguez in right. He has the upside to eventually become the second-best hitter in their lineup behind José Ramírez,” Callis wrote.
The Guardians took Kayfus in the third round of the 2023 MLB Draft.
The 23-year-old dominated with a .291/.393/.511 slash line between High-A and Double-A in his first full season.
He hit .364 in just 18 games and proved to be way ahead of schedule at Double-A before earning a promotion to the Triple-A Clippers.
The Miami product kept his foot on the gas at Columbus, slashing .283/.367/.526 with 43 RBI, 13 home runs, 14 doubles, and four triples.
Kayfus will give this team a much-needed lefty power-hitter who also has a knack for drawing walks.
On the downside, he still needs to clean up his act at the plate to avoid chasing pitches and striking out as often as he does.
Other than that, he looks like a star in the making.
While primarily a first baseman, Kayfus has been playing at both corners of the outfield, so he could and should be in the mix to take some playing time from Daniel Schneemann and Nolan Jones, both of whom are struggling right now.
The Guardians could also give him some appearances at first base, where he’s seen as an elite defender, and with Carlos Santana struggling so much, he could be another interesting option there.
