Back on July 3, MLB placed Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz on non-disciplinary paid leave as they investigate his involvement in betting irregularities.
That leave was later extended through August 31, as the league is yet to announce the results of investigations.
Ortiz is being accused of influencing prop bets in MLB games, which could bring him severe penalties.
On Monday, another Guardians pitcher was flagged.
It was none other than All-Star closer and all-time franchise saves leader Emmanuel Clase.
“BREAKING: Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as part of MLB’s sports-betting investigation, sources tell ESPN. Clase is the second Guardians pitcher on leave tied to the investigation, joining right-hander Luis Ortiz,” MLB insider Jeff Passan posted on X.

The Guardians released a statement confirming that Clase is currently under investigation for similar offenses to those Ortiz incurred.

He, like Ortiz, is going to be on paid leave until at least August 31.
For what it’s worth, there are signs that point to Clase being involved in a prop bets scandal, just as Ortiz.
“Emmanuel Clase has thrown 22 pitches this season with a 0-0 count with the bases empty outside of the Gameday strike zone. Of those, I’ve classified 11 of them as “uncompetitive.” Here is a look at all of them,” researcher Ahaan Rungta posted on X.

It’s one of the most painful blows the Guardians have received in the 2025 season, and they have absorbed a lot of them.
Clase had managed to right the ship after a rough start and is currently sporting a 3.23 ERA in 47.1 innings.
His future is now cloudy, with a potential suspension looming.
