The Cleveland Guardians are finally showing signs of life.
They looked lost and out of sorts in June, but they’ve bounced back strongly in July.
Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean they won’t be sellers at the trade deadline.
At least, that’s how Mark Feinsand feels.
In his latest column, he pointed out that Steven Kwan could be an elite trade piece, although he admitted that it would take a whole lot for the Guardians to even consider moving him:
“Kwan is under club control for two more years, so while the Guardians don’t have to move him, he may be their best asset to bring back a solid package of young talent. The two-time All-Star has elite bat-to-ball skills (he ranks in the 100th percentile in whiff percentage and 99th percentile in strikeout percentage) and has a strong arm in left field. It’s going to take a big offer to pry Kwan from Cleveland, but the Guardians’ front office can be very creative,” Feinsand wrote.
There have been plenty of contradictory reports regarding Kwan and his availability.
Some thought that he would be on the move because of the fact that the team has yet to sign him to a contract extension.
Also, like Feinsand pointed out, he could land the team an elite trade package in return.
Even so, it’s not like they should be in any sort of rush to move on from him, even if they actually intended to do so.
This team is bouncing back and looking strong, and their schedule for the final stretch of the campaign is one of the easiest – if not the easiest – in the entire league.
Trading him would set this team back years, and it might even trigger an unwanted ripple effect.
Jose Ramirez has never been on the trade block, but he might want to reconsider his future with the team if they decide to trade their second-best player.
All things considered, this will be a situation to keep a close eye on.
