The Cleveland Guardians find themselves at a crossroads as the MLB trade deadline approaches, with their star closer Emmanuel Clase drawing significant attention from playoff contenders.
The reliever has become one of the most coveted assets on the market, creating a difficult decision for a franchise caught between competing now and building for the future.
Multiple contending teams have emerged as serious pursuers of Clase, according to MLB insider Jim Bowden, putting Cleveland in an enviable yet challenging position.
“Teams like the Phillies, and the Mets, and the Tigers – they have enough in their farm system to make a deal. I think he’s more likely to go to Philly or the Mets than the Tigers. I’m not sure they’re going to trade him in their own division, unless they get overwhelmed,” Bowden said.

At just 27 years old, Clase continues to establish himself as one of baseball’s premier closers.
This season, he has maintained a 2.86 ERA while recording 44 strikeouts and 21 saves across 44 innings.
His contract situation makes him even more attractive to potential suitors, as he remains under team control through 2026 with two club options valued at just $10 million each for 2027 and 2028.
The Guardians currently sit at 47-49, trailing Detroit by 11 games in the AL Central division while sitting four games behind in the Wild Card race.
Cleveland’s offensive struggles have been well-documented, which has intensified speculation about potential roster moves.
Should Cleveland decide to move Clase, they could turn to Cade Smith as their new closer while targeting high-level prospects from teams with deep farm systems.
The Guardians aren’t rushing into any decisions, but if the right package materializes, Clase could anchor a significant deadline transaction.
