The Cleveland Guardians might think this season can’t be saved, but that’s not the case with the future of the organization.
The 2025 MLB Draft is just around the corner, and it will give the Guardians a big opportunity to keep adding talent to their ranks.
The Guardians will have five picks among the first 101 selections.
As such, they will look to stack as much talent as possible, as opposed to thinking about potential needs for their roster or farm system.
In a recent interview with Cleveland.com, Guardians senior vice president of scouting Paul Gillispie tipped the team’s hand ahead of next week’s festivities:
“We probably consider positional need maybe a little bit later in the draft when we think about just making sure we have opportunities for players,” Gillispie said. “But overall, I think the goal is just to bring in the best player and the best fits for our organization regardless of where they play.”
Most teams usually take players based on their roster needs, but that’s just not the way it works in baseball, at least not all the time.
The Guardians are thinking about the long-term outlook and potential as opposed to trying to patch things up right now.
This class is reportedly deep at several positions, so the Guardians might be taking the right approach by focusing on the upside and talent instead.
The Guardians will have the No. 27 pick in the first round.
Then, they will be back on the clock at No. 64, No. 66, and No. 70.
The new MLB Draft format will compress the schedule from three days to two, which will obviously pose a different challenge for all organizations.
Even so, the Guardians usually fare well in these events, and it’ll be interesting to see the players they’ve set their sights on.
