The Cleveland Guardians might be struggling, but they have a legitimate MVP candidate.
Jose Ramirez is having one of the best seasons of his career, which is a lot to say.
He just received his seventh AL All-Star selection, and he will be a starter for the fourth time.
Nevertheless, he’s still far from satisfied.
Asked about his game and what to improve on, the third baseman told Zack Meisel of The Athletic that he needs to be better at everything:
“When pressed on what aspect of his game, exactly, he isn’t satisfied with, Ramírez replied: ‘Todo. Todo. Todo. Todo.’ That translates to ‘all,’ or in this case, ‘everything,’ and his insistence on repeating the word conveys the disappointment of a potential Hall of Famer who holds himself to a high standard,” Meisel wrote.
Of course, that speaks volumes about Ramirez’s relentless work ethic and pursuit of perfection, but also about his leadership.
His individual numbers are great, but he’s looking for team success.
Even so, that doesn’t mean his career isn’t worth celebrating.
He just became the first player in Cleveland franchise history to get four All-Star selections voted by the fans.
He’s also tied with Lou Boudreau, Larry Doby, Ken Keltner and Bob Lemon for the second-most All-Star Game appearances, one behind Bob Feller.
He’s more than deserving of a selection to the 2025 game, as he’s slashing .301/.363/.487 with an OPS of .850, while also posting a career-best 21-game hitting streak and an on-base streak of 39 games.
Approaching 33 years old, it looks like Ramirez could be at the peak of his powers for the next several years.
Hopefully, the rest of the team will step up and help him win a well-deserved World Series ring.
