The Cleveland Guardians have some major issues to address.
They can’t seem to get on base, and when they do, whoever’s at the plate struggles to drive them home.
This team’s offensive struggles have been an issue for the whole season, but it seems like they keep getting worse and worse as the year goes by.
That’s why, even though they went 4-5 in their three-city road trip, the latest signs have been far from encouraging.
As shown by Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com, the Guardians are having a tough time scoring runs:
“The Guardians went 4-5 on this nine-game trip, winning the last two series against San Francisco and the A’s. But it was far from an offensive clinic,” Hoynes wrote. “Here are some numbers from the nine-game trip. The Guardians scored 21 runs in nine games. That’s an average of 2.3 runs per game. They were outscored, 30-21. They hit .193 (11 for 57) with runners in scoring position. They hit .197 (58 for 294) as a team.”
There was a time when the Guardians could hold their ground despite not scoring much because they had the best closer in all of baseball.
That may not be the case anymore, and there are some rumors about Emmanuel Clase potentially being on the trade block.
The starters have bounced back from a tough start to the season, but still, you’re not going to win many games when you score roughly two runs per contest.
All things considered, it’s almost surprising to see that the Guardians are flirting with .500 baseball despite their offensive woes.
That goes to show you just how far this team could go if the front office were to make just a couple of minor tweaks to add more firepower to the lineup.
There’s also a chance that some of the youngsters, like Chase DeLauter or C.J. Kayfus, could make a strong impact when they’re called up.
Whatever the case, the fact of the matter is that this team ought to do something.
